Introduction of the organisation and the network requirements




i) Background
 

    An increase in computer network users at the renowned technical institution UTeM in Melaka, Malaysia, forced them to revamp their network architecture. The current network confronts difficulties such constrained bandwidth, ageing hardware, scalability problems, and insufficient security. The project's goals are to improve network administration, facilitate seamless cooperation, boost security, expand bandwidth capacity, and improve network performance for UTeM's Main Campus and its 10 subnetworks.


ii) Business operations 

    The business operations of UTeM include the management of academic programmes at various levels as well as the redesign of the networking infrastructure to meet the growing number of users. As a Senior Network Engineer include reviewing and upgrading the network, maintaining security and performance, promoting cooperation and communication, and assisting with research and development activities. These operations seek to improve connection and innovation at UTeM while also ensuring effective education delivery.


iii) The network needs of the organisation

Network needs of UTeM include :

Scalability : the capacity to accommodate an increasing number of network users.

Reliability : ensuring continuous connectivity with little downtime.

Performance: high-speed and low-latency connections are provided.

Security : the protection of sensitive information and the defence against cyber attacks.

Flexibility: supporting various departmental demands as well as future technological improvements.

Management and monitoring : effective network administration and proactive problem response.

Collaboration and Communication: facilitating user cooperation and communication.

Research support : providing specialised assistance for research activity.
